OVO, a family business with more than 80 years of experience. Three sisters who decided to undertake a new project based on the production of cage-free pasture eggs from free-range hens using the rotational grazing system.

What is the history of OVO?

OVO was born in the context of a full pandemic thanks to a viral video that we saw on social networks where he commented a little on this new trend of cage-free housing in other continents. Hence, we felt great interest in the project and began with a learning path about the project and several virtual training sessions due to the context in which it was lived.

Little by little we set up the establishment with the corresponding carts, the purchase of birds and our classification and assembly room. In February 2021 we launched sales with all our corresponding authorizations and certifications.

What mission does the company have? Where are they located?

Our mission is to produce and sell cage-free eggs and continue adding to our paradigm of sustainable production committed to animal welfare, thus publicizing and informing about this trend of responsible consumption. We are located 18 km from the city of Olavarría, province of Buenos Aires.

What characteristics do pastoral eggs have?

The main characteristic of pastoral eggs is the method of feeding the birds. They are raised in extensive pasture fields where they can graze freely eating grass and insects. In this way, together with the development of the natural activities of the species, they produce an egg of high nutritional quality, with a great size and flavor.

How is your production process?

Our production process is the Rotary Pastoral System. It is a housing system made up of mobile modules, specially designed for them, respecting their quality of life and animal welfare standards. As the birds consume the nearby pasture, the module is moved to the adjacent fresh sector.

What is the differential that have the pastoral eggs?

In principle, grazing in freedom demonstrates a respect for the treatment of birds that is not seen in industrialized farming. In turn, by being able to graze freely, the birds acquire enough energy and nutrients to produce a high-quality egg.

What types and how many chickens do you have on the farm?

We only work with layer birds of the Lohmann Brown breed, a top quality line. We currently have 2,000 birds on our farm.

What do chickens eat?

The birds feed mainly on grazing consisting of white clover, fescue and alfalfa, where they also get insects. And in turn, we produce in our establishment a supplementary balanced feed made with a special variety of corn for poultry and other ingredients of its diet prepared by our specialized nutritionists.

What certifications do they have?

We are the first company in the province of Buenos Aires to obtain certification in Animal Welfare, granted by the International Agricultural Organization, a food quality certifier. Our production system has the quality attribute of eggs obtained from free-range hens raised and managed respecting animal welfare.

What is its importance?

Obtaining certification is an excellent tool to promote and position our product. It is also a great contribution to creating a friendly link with the consumer by making it easier for them to read our great added value in production while respecting animal welfare. In this way we attract potential consumers and achieve better exposure in sales communication channels and information about these new systems.

What is the production volume you have?

Our production volume is 92% average.

What difference does your production have with the conventional one?

The first and great difference is the freedom of the birds. In conventional productions, the birds live overcrowded and caged without the possibility of carrying out a normal life of the species, without being able to do their daily exercises, sunbathe, eat and drink correctly and among many other poor care. On the other hand, in our production system, the birds are 100% free, they have a mobile cart suitable for their species, respecting the measures of the animal welfare regulations, with their perches to rest and exercise, their correct number of nest boxes per bird with their straw beds, where they can come and go at their mercy. They have shaded areas, more than 4 square meters per pasture bird, their number of hours of rest and light is respected, they have an automatic drinking system through nipples where their water is always kept fresh since we carry out adequate temperature control, and in turn, the cars have a metal mesh floor that allows the excrement to fall to the ground, which on the one hand acts as a natural fertilizer and on the other prevents the spread of diseases in the birds.

What does the company’s environmental commitment consist of?

Our environmental commitment is reflected in two sectors. On the one hand, our packaging is 100% ecological, biodegradable and compostable. Our maple packs and cases are made from recyclable molded pulp and our carton sleeves are also recyclable printed with water soluble inks on an eco-friendly print shop. And on the other we take care of water waste with our automatic nipple system, the birds drink only the necessary amount of water they need, we fertilize the land with natural fertilizer and we use solar panels for the lighting of the cars.

How is the product distributed?

We have two sales channels, our online store with home delivery and affiliated stores where we carry our product and they sell it. We carry out the transfer ourselves, always taking care to maintain the safety of the eggs and their freshness.

How can the consumer obtain more information?

The consumer can obtain more information through our virtual channels. Our website www.ovo.tienda and our social networks on Instagram and Facebook @ovo.tienda where you can find information about our production system, photos and videos of our birds and everything you need to learn about this new trend.

What are the next objectives that the company has?

Our next goals are to continue growing in our region, seeking that large supermarket chains and local merchants bet on our product as we are achieving. In addition to being able to become a product recognized and sold at the federal level in the future.
