The consumption of vegan products and their certification grows in Argentina

According to a study carried out in mid-2020 by the Unión Vegana Argentina (UVA) together with the company Kantar Insights Division, the vegan-vegetarian community in the country numbered around five million people. Faced with this situation, the International Agricultural Organization (OIA), launched a private protocol, vegan products.
The consumption of vegan products has grown rapidly in Argentina in recent years and, with this increase, so has the demand for certifications that certify compliance with manufacturing processes and standards, and allow consumers to identify those that do not contain ingredients. of animal origin and/or animal derivatives.
According to a study carried out in mid-2020 by the Unión Vegana Argentina (UVA) together with the company Kantar Insights Division, the vegan-vegetarian community in the country numbered around five million people, which is equivalent to 12% of the population, three percentage points more than in 2019.
Veganism – a term coined in 1944 by Donald Watson, a member of the British Vegetarian Society – “extended the commitment to defend animal rights to all areas of life beyond food,” explained the president of the UVA, Manuel Martí , in dialogue with Télam.
Despite being relatively recent, this lifestyle has experienced vigorous growth in recent years: “An important and constantly growing minority,” said Martí.
The rise of veganism in Argentina, and with it the supply of specific products and services, increased the demand for a “seal” or certification that identifies those free of ingredients of animal origin throughout the production chain.
Faced with this scenario and the need to quickly identify these products, OIA launches the vegan and vegetarian product identification seals to make it easier for consumers to identify certified products, ensuring that they do not contain ingredients or supplements of animal origin and that they do not have been tested on animals.
These seals seek to convey transparency and confidence to the consumer, while allowing producers to demonstrate their commitment and responsibility in the production of vegan and vegetarian products of the highest certified quality.
