World Environment Day: Good Agricultural Practices to ensure healthy and safe food

05 Jun 2023

Senasa highlighted the production processes to ensure quality and sustainability. In addition, they promote habitat protection and consumer health.

The National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) promotes Good Agricultural Practices as an imperative need. These actions range from planting to harvesting and post-harvesting of crops, ensuring that food is safe for both human and animal consumption.

For this reason, on World Environment Day, established by the United Nations (UN) on December 15, 1977, every June 5, the importance of these practices and their mandatory nature for fruits and vegetables, as well as the minimum requirements, are highlighted.

Compliance with GAPs involves the responsible use of phytosanitary products authorized by Senasa, the implementation of traceability measures and the proper management of water used in agricultural processes.

GAPs imply a way of producing and processing agricultural products.

Another fundamental aspect of Good Agricultural Practices is training and technical assistance. The presence of a specialized professional is required to advise on the implementation of these practices, ensuring the periodic updating of knowledge and the continuous training of personnel involved in agricultural production.

By promoting responsible agricultural production, these practices contribute to environmental protection and to meeting consumer demands for quality food.

The implementation of these practices is fundamental to building a more sustainable future, where agricultural production is compatible with environmental protection and the well-being of society as a whole.

As for animals, they are prohibited from entering the cultivation areas and the areas where the harvested product is handled. It is essential to prevent the access of domestic animals, farm animals and other working animals that are not carrying out specific activities. If working animals are used, they must be in a recognized state of health.

In relation to the use of organic fertilizers and amendments, they must be registered with Senasa. In the case of self-produced fertilizers, they must be subjected to appropriate treatments to minimize the sanitary risk. It is strictly forbidden to use waste from sewage systems and septic tanks as inputs in agricultural production.

They also emphasized the importance of having a technical manager to provide advice on the implementation of GAP. This professional must have mandatory training through a course with an official certificate and must be kept up to date on a regular basis.

The main objective of applying this set of practices is to obtain healthy and safe food, taking care of both the environment and the health of workers and society as a whole. By adopting Good Agricultural Practices, we promote sustainability in agricultural production, guaranteeing the quality of the food that reaches our table and contributing to the conservation of the environment.
